The finishing line

Finally the finishing of our Blimp city! The last few days of this project were spent on extra concept art and finding statistics. I tried to do concept based around Pixar’s animation ‘Up’. I think the blimp could be way better to be honest, but pushed for time it was the best I could do!

I also found this really cool blog by

Looking through his work was really inspiring! one of his piece’s was a series of quirky street lamps! Because in the street view for our city I made the old more fashionable (i think) street lamps, I thought it would be nice to make a quick quirky piece based around this and Watanabe’s artwork.

It also reminds me of the lamp from The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S Lewis who was Belfast born and raised!

Our rendered 360 of the blimp city was put together too;

and with the info graphic’s finally finished, our project has came to a end! I think we’ve done pretty well!

Today in class we started to look at modelling body parts, Alec took us through modelling a arm and hand!

It was really insightful for our next task to model a fellow students head and face! I’m excited to start looking into research about typology and how muscles move and work.

Reaching the end of the tunnel

As the floating building/city project comes to a close, I finally got our street view for Blimp city finished! Using many tutorial’s which I will link at the end of the post. I find myself learning lots from this practice in working with 3D Modelling and especially using the maya software. Below is a 360 playblast of the streets and screenshots of my journey through different models made;

And finally images of the rendered out come!!!!!!!!!

I’m really happy with the outcome of my work! I think it looks realistic on some level, but as a first timer and still learning I think it looks well! I also used mirrors at times to make the city street view look bigger.

With that out of the way the team made a basic plan of action!

Along with the street view, the actual blimp the city sit’s on top of was to be modelled and rendered each of us took different parts to model! I ended up with the apartment block Harland and Wolff Cranes!

I’m not very proud of them but with time running out and the deadline drawing near I didn’t want to spend any more time on them. I also did do concept art based around them;

I based it around the Silhouette city by deviant artist TB-Tapion

Along with our simple plan we each decided to model basic rooms in which the average person living in this city would have, a.k.a Living room, Bathroom, Bedroom and Kitchen. I started to model the bathroom following tutorials on youtube and being adventurous trying to add my own twist on things. Below was the final outcome;

Adding the light and texturing was difficult having missed the class when learning to do basic texturing I asked member’s of the team how to do it and followed tutorials. The lighting wasn’t as hard after going through it in class last week. Below are the practices done in class last week although I still want to get around to finishing them off;

And the final rendered images of the bathroom;

On top of this discussing info graphic’s was also a huge topic within the group and we’ve decided to go with the simplistic style of Neil Gibson.

Sorcha has done the honor of looking into the design and making of the graphics and the science behind it all! Reading through her blog post was really interesting! Below is  is a link to it;

I started to do more research into facts and statistics on the city of belfast, some of which our unbelievable! I recommend having a look through the website’s below;

And finally the links I used to figure out how to model on maya;

Floating city and animating practice!

More recently in the project based around the concept of a floating building/city, modelling was put into action! We agreed as a team that a street view, basic rooms and the actual concept should be modelled! I personally started the modelling of the street view, following and watching the tutorial below;

And so on.. Below is the final outcome! I’m pretty happy with it, as a beginner i did find it hard at times and had problems with a few things. This week we’ll hopefully get more building’s added, lamp posts, cars, and other things to furnish it as well as adding textures, lighting and camera’s.

I also started to practice trying to convey body language in characters, which will greatly help with our next project for New Narratives. I downloaded the free Flour sack rig and tried to convey the emotion of sadness, happiness and anger;

We also started to look at different ways to presenting the data we got on Belfast and added facts and statistic’s about Belfast in the bus tour video;

Looking up on data visualisation, it’s a way to communicate information in hopefully the easiest possible way! Which is something my team want to incorporate into this project! Looking through information found on the internet it was obvious the visuals were more effective than just writing down the statistic’s below are some graphs we found online;

Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 14.57.54 Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 14.58.20 Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 14.58.32 Screen Shot 2015-02-23 at 15.04.10

The simplistic style is easy to understand and hold a lot of information! Although as a team we kind of leaned toward charts and infographics, but I found this link below of different software, websites, etc used that help show information in different ways too;

I also found these video’s below really interesting!

The video above, is kind of something more advanced in style to show information through video. Kind of what we tried to do with the documentary of the Belfast tour bus.

On top of all this we gathered as a group to manage the project better! Sorcha had took it upon herself to create a plan for the plan! She’s done a lot of research into planning and management, teamwork and how should teams go about projects. We ended up making a priority list!

also the final jumping jonas;

Floating Belfast and more..

Over the past week or so, the team have been focusing in on the building and design aspect of the project as well the information needed. We went on a belfast bus tour, which I personally thought was pointless because they joked around a lot with the culture and accent etc, and didn’t give much useful information for the project with the exception of a few things, we documentated the tour together using our phones below is the outcome of the footage but editing is still on going because we would like to put facts and information as titles about the sequence;

As a group we decided the (hopefully) final outcome of what the floating city/building should look like;

image (10) copy

We’ve decided that the building should be a city sitting on a blimp, the blimp will work as a greenhouse and supply food and oxygen for the city above, it will also be in the shape as the big fish statue in Belfast city centre, the Harland and Wolff cranes will work as apartment blocks and a wall surround the whole city, inspired by the peace-walls that can be seen through out Belfast. The Girl with the Hop statue will also work as a government building although this is last priority. The group focusing on modelling furniture and the actually buildings and blimp before worrying about other concepts we discussed in case the deadline comes sooner rather than later. Below is a link to a pinterest board created for inspiration;

In class we’ve been going through basic modelling techniques and created a kitchen cupboard!

I found it highly enjoyable and learnt alot, I feel alot more confident on modelling! I can’t wait to get a start on modelling now for the floating Belfast project. On top of that it was recommended for us to do a rigging tutorial on Jonas, I found it difficult, I’m nearly 100% sure there is a missing bit of information when rigging him, as there isn’t any instructions based around the head_squash_ctrl, trying to solve it myself by creating another nurbb circle and trying to parent it in a way so the squash and stretch would work was really difficult, I guess I still don’t quite have a understanding for it yet. I did however manage to rig the rest without any problems!

In the last class it was recommend to try and animate the famous sack of flour! I’m really looking forward to learning how to portray emotions and fluid body movements in animating.

Imaging and data visualisation Week 1

Beginning this module is scaring me..

Last week we were given a introduction to the wonders of the imaging and data visualisation module. It seems to be more technical then any module before although it’s still too early to say. What is it? It’s everything and anything, it’s covering simple and not so simple processes, software problems, “a how to do..” kind of module, things that will probably come incredibly helpful in the future.

We were also given the our first task due in week 7, to gather as much data about Belfast as possible and then design a floating building for the population to live in comfortably. The interior must be furnished, and the final model should be rendered with a 360 view.

I know I will find the modelling stressful but I’m pretty excited to get cracking! I’ve already started  to brainstorm with my team on things that we could include in the building, things we should take into consideration for example, hospitals, public services, energy sources, food and water sources, etc. We’ve also arranged as a group to go on a Belfast tour bus! Nothing is set in stone as of yet but I’m sure within the next week we’ll have it our main plan and a to do list ready! Below are some links I’ve already come across;–
